My last post on how Purpose is overrated made me think of other things in my life that are overrated, at least in the past year. Here are some of them, in no particular order…
- Apple
- Fixed-Gear Bicycles
- Luxury/Fast Cars
- Popularity
- Big Houses
- Correct Belief
- Amerikan Kapitalism
- The War on Drugs
- Imported Organic Food
- Christmas
- Halloween
- The Credit System
- Modern Medicines
- Clothes
- Having it all together
- Keeping a straight face
- Success
- Makeup
- The Stock Market
- Texting
…And now for some underrated things…
- Silence
- Campfires
- Walking
- No Cell-Phone Service
- No Lights/Electricity
- Old People
- Water
- Tears
- Bathroom Humor
- Uncertainty
- Wandering
- Listening
- Dirt
- Atmospheric/New Age Music
- Face-to-Face Communication
- Psychotherapy/Counseling
- Delayed Gratification
- Journaling
- Indigenous People
- Growing your own food
There are more I could add to both of these lists, but I had to stop somewhere. How about you? What’s underrated or overrated in your life?
Gotta move bathroom humor to my overrated list as well, and of course, Apple evangelist that I am, I’m a bit miffed at #1 on the overrated list ( ha! ) but in general me-likey. It’s a great exercise, I think. I’m already thinking about mine.
An enjoyable post to read Dave! I love that Delayed Gratification is on the underrated list, along with no electricity. If people were more independently minded, instead of following the crowd, we’d have alot less of the overrated list, and alot more of the underrated evened out.
Great lists!
For me, I underrate making the effort to go see friends.
And also running/fitness. It’s something I don’t do much of, but it’s so good.

Wow, it’s seldom that I agree with a post so wholeheartedly. Personally, I’d move campfires and bathroom humour to the overrated list, and I’d ditch dirt. But I totally agree with everything else!
